New 4K restoration of Terrence Malick’s 1978 classic, Days of Heaven, performed by Resillion to premiere at Venice Film Festival in September.

Resillion’s best in class digital film restoration team has played an integral role in restoring hundreds of classic films. From Orson Wells’ landmark, CITIZEN KANE to Martin Scorsese’s gritty tour de force, MEAN STREETS, and now Terrence Malick’s masterpiece, DAYS OF HEAVEN.

A new 4K restoration of DAYS OF HEAVEN will be premiering at the Venice Film Festival in September as part of the Venice Classics program. Launched in January of this year, Resillion’s new digital film restoration team was fortunate to play a key part in the restoration of this classic film.

Before starting the new restoration of Terrence Malick’s DAYS OF HEAVEN, Resillion’s talented artists thoroughly assessed the new 4K scans of the camera negative which revealed numerous stains and debris throughout.  The team used Filmworkz’s Phoenix Refine software to address problematic areas and fix small debris and scratches and address any flicker or shakiness in the image.  MTI’s Nova software was then used to manually clean up more complex damage, like large chemical stains and tears in the film.  Countless hours of work from the Resillion restoration team were performed on the project to ensure that it was of the highest quality and helped to bring new life into this timeless film. Malick supervised both the new color and restoration of the film, demanding a meticulous level of detail and precision.

Lee Kline (client)

“As a client who demands perfection, Resillion’s team of restoration artists understand film and the delicate balance between restoring and over-restoring. For instance, when the beautiful shots of wheat in Days of Heaven wave majestically in the film, every pixel is kept intact without losing detail. It’s something that not all restoration labs are conscious of.”

Resillion Team

“Days of Heaven’s iconic sprawling exteriors proved to be as challenging to restore as they are visually stunning.”
