Reliable USB-C charging performance for Philip Morris International
Challenge
A global consumer device manufacturer needed to make sure its USB-C products would charge reliably across the wide range of chargers, cables and power sources used by customers worldwide.
Approach
Resillion tested the products with a library of 500+ USB chargers and charging ports, checking charging speed, stability, power negotiation, interruptions and compatibility across different manufacturers and technologies.
Results
The testing helped reduce charging issues for customers, giving them greater confidence that their devices would charge reliably across the wide range of chargers, cables and power sources they use every day.
The challenge: Ensuring USB-C interoperability and reliable charging for connected consumer devices worldwide
As USB-C becomes the universal charging standard, consumers expect products to charge reliably regardless of which charger they use. In reality, the global charging ecosystem is highly fragmented, with thousands of chargers, cables and power sources implementing USB specifications in different ways.
Philip Morris International wanted to ensure that its connected consumer devices delivered a consistent charging experience across the broad range of chargers used by customers worldwide. While standards compliance provides an important baseline, real-world interoperability can only be proven through testing against the chargers consumers actually use every day.
Philip Morris International needed confidence that its products would charge reliably, efficiently and without interruption across a diverse charging landscape while protecting both product quality and brand reputation.
Our approach: Testing USB-C compatibility and interoperability across 500+ real-world chargers
As an authorised USB-IF test laboratory, we help manufacturers validate USB performance beyond compliance requirements by combining standards expertise with large-scale interoperability testing.
To replicate real-world charging scenarios, we evaluated Philip Morris products against a library of more than 500 USB chargers and charging ports representing the global charging ecosystem. Testing covered a wide variety of USB-A and USB-C charging solutions, power profiles and charger implementations.
USB-C charging interoperability testing – what we assessed:
- Charging speed and power delivery behaviour
- Charging stability throughout the battery charging cycle
- Full battery charging performance
- Charging interruptions and unexpected disconnects
- Power negotiation and charger-device communication
- Voltage and current characteristics
- Compatibility across a broad range of charger manufacturers and technologies
Using specialised USB measurement and analysis tools, we collected detailed interoperability data and identified any charging behaviours that could impact the end-user experience.
Results: Improved charging reliability across diverse charging environments
Through extensive interoperability testing, Philip Morris gained valuable insight into product behaviour across hundreds of real-world charging scenarios.
The programme delivered:
Increased confidence in product readiness before launch
Early identification of interoperability risks
Improved charging reliability across diverse charging environments
Reduced risk of consumer support issues related to charging performance
Data-driven optimisation of charging behaviour
Enhanced end-user experience through more consistent charging performance
By validating products against a representative cross-section of the global USB charging market, Philip Morris was able to minimise compatibility risks and strengthen charging reliability before products reached consumers.
Why Resillion
USB certification is an important step, but successful products require more than compliance alone. Even certified devices can encounter unexpected behaviour when exposed to the wide variety of chargers available in the real world.
As an authorised USB-IF test laboratory with extensive interoperability testing capabilities, we help manufacturers bridge the gap between compliance and customer experience. Our approach enables organisations to uncover interoperability issues early, optimise product behaviour and deliver greater confidence in product quality before launch.
The impact: Reliable USB-C charging performance across real-world conditions
For Philip Morris, interoperability testing provided assurance that products would perform reliably across the diverse charging environments used by customers around the world.
By testing against hundreds of chargers rather than relying solely on specification compliance, Philip Morris was able to validate charging performance under real-world conditions, helping protect product quality, reduce customer frustration and strengthen consumer confidence.
