Cyber Security for the Radio Equipment Directive

From 1 August 2025, all new and existing products placed on the EU market under the scope of the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) must comply with new cyber security requirements. Ensure your products are compliant today.

Protecting consumers in a connected world

The rise of connected devices – using Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth and internet connectivity – has increased the risk of cyberattacks, identity theft and financial fraud for both consumers and businesses.

To address this, the European Commission has updated the Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU). From 1 August 2025, all wireless devices sold in the EU must be tested and certified as safe and secure before they reach the market.

What products will these changes impact?

The changes affect all products declared compliant to the Radio Equipment Directive including:

  • wireless devices such as mobile phones, tablets and other products capable of communicating over the Internet
  • toys and childcare equipment including baby monitors
  • wearable equipment such as smartwatches or fitness trackers

Excluded devices include smart meters, 5G network equipment, medical devices, as well as vehicles.

What standards need to be met for conformity?

There are currently no harmonised standards, therefore we highly recommended you test according to existing standards such as EN 303 645. It’s likely that these will be used as a basis for future harmonised standards. Testing to these standards will prepare you for the August 2025 deadline.
