Widespread use of products using technologies such as Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth, as well as those connected to the internet, increases the risk of a cyber-attack. Either at home or in public locations, the risk to consumers and businesses of a cyber-attack or identity/financial fraud has grown significantly over recent years.
To help mitigate these risks, the European Commission has extended the Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU) to ensure that all wireless devices sold in the EU from the 1st of August 2024 are tested and assessed as safe and secure in use.

What products will these changes impact?

The changes affect all products declared compliant to the Radio Equipment Directive including:

Wireless devices such as mobile phones, tablets and other products capable of communicating over the Internet
Toys and childcare equipment including baby monitors
Wearable equipment such as smartwatches or fitness trackers

The requirements do not apply to products outside the scope of RED. Excluded devices include smart meters, 5G network equipment, medical devices, as well as vehicles.

What products will these changes impact?

What standards need to be met for conformity?

There are currently no harmonised standards, therefore it is highly recommended to apply testing in accordance with existing standards such as EN 303 645. It is likely that these will be used as a basis for future harmonised standards. Testing to these standards will prepare you for the August 2024 deadline.

What actions do you need to take and when?

Manufacturers should begin to prepare for the August 2024 deadline now.

Review existing products along with new product designs to ensure that they will comply with the new cyber security requirements.
