New 4K Restoration of Gregg Araki’s Mysterious Skin to Premiere at Academy Museum

Resillion is proud to announce the completion of a new 4K restoration of Gregg Araki’s 2004 cult classic Mysterious Skin, set to premiere at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on 19 September. 

Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and based on the novel by Scott HeimMysterious Skin is a haunting exploration of trauma, identity, and resilience.

Working from a new 4K scan of the original camera negative, Resillion’s digital restoration artists meticulously restored each frame. Director Gregg Araki personally oversaw the new HDR colour grade, ensuring the film’s visual tone remained true to his original vision. 

“We were honoured to be part of this restoration,” said Josh Erkman, President of Resillion. “Our team approached the project with the utmost care, with this new 4K HDR restoration, audiences are now able to experience ‘Mysterious Skin’ in the best presentation possible 

The restoration was made possible by a collaboration between Strand Releasing, Antidote Films, the Academy Film Archive, Frameline, the Sundance Institute, and the UCLA Film & TV Archive. Audio restoration was completed at Monkeyland Audio, the original sound studio. 

Resillion’s restoration team has previously worked on titles including Days of HeavenThis is Spinal Tap, Trainspotting, and Sorcerer.
