Resillion at WHY2025: A weekend of hacking, learning and connection
From 8 to 12 August, a team of eight Resillion colleagues, five from the Netherlands and three from the UK, travelled to Geestmerambacht in North Holland to attend WHY2025.
A renowned open-air hacker camp held every four years, this event attracted over 3,500 participants from across Europe, including experts from the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and the UK. The ‘WHY’ in WHY2025 stands for What Hackers Yearn, a very appropriate title given the events taking place.
What is WHY2025?
At its core, WHY2025 is a community-driven gathering for hackers, makers, programmers and cyber security professionals. It offers workshops, technical talks and practical sessions on topics ranging from lockpicking and soldering to emerging threats in digital security.
The Resillion village
Our team established a communal base for collaboration and preparation for the CTF (Capture The Flag) competition, a cyber security challenge with nearly 1,000 participants. We were pleased to achieve a very creditable 47th place.
Highlights
There were several sessions that stood out at the event. Notable highlights included exploring vulnerabilities in NAS systems, routers, EV chargers and TETRA networks. They also included innovative DNS exploitation techniques, examining AI prompt injection risks and creative projects such as weather balloons and safe flamethrower construction.
Networking opportunities
The camp came alive at night with music, film screenings, fire shows and the opportunity for informal networking. Together, this fostered valuable connections within the tight-knit hacker community.
In the spotlight
NPO Radio 1, the Netherlands’ leading news station, was present and interviewed our team about ethical hacking and the importance of sharing cyber security knowledge.
Overall, WHY2025 was a great blend of innovation, collaboration and community spirit. We came away from the event feeling energized, a little sleep-deprived and looking forward to the next event in 2029.
