Helping Home Assistant achieve Matter certification

Challenge

Home Assistant wanted to become the first open-source smart home platform to earn Matter certification. Its unique architecture required a tailored approach beyond standard testing tools.

Our approach

We partnered with Home Assistant to build a bespoke, automated testing framework. Hundreds of reusable test scripts were developed and executed in custom labs to meet CSA compliance.

Results

Certification was achieved, boosting trust, ecosystem credibility and future readiness – setting a new benchmark for open-source smart home interoperability.

The challenge: Certifying an open-source smart home platform

Home Assistant, created by Nabu Casa and supported by the Open Home Foundation, is one of the world’s leading open-source smart home platforms. It gives people control over all their smart devices in one place – locally, privately and without depending on the cloud.

Home Assistant has always supported open standards like Matter, Zigbee, and Z-Wave. To strengthen its position and ensure seamless compatibility with other smart devices, the team set out to achieve Matter certification from the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA).

This certification would prove that Home Assistant’s software meets Matter standards and works reliably with other certified devices. It would also make the platform more trusted by users and device makers alike.

However, the process wasn’t simple. Home Assistant’s setup – certifying both its Matter Server and Home Assistant user interface to the Matter 1.3 specification – required a unique and tailored approach that couldn’t rely on standard tooling or processes.

Home Assistant’s implementations of Matter, Zigbee and Z-Wave are already industry-leading, so it only makes sense to clearly signal and give users peace of mind that we provide true compatibility.

Our approach: Creating a bespoke testing framework

We worked closely with the Home Assistant team from the start. Our focus was on collaboration, precision and building a custom testing framework that truly fit their needs.

Building bespoke automated tests

Acting as the official test partner, we developed hundreds of automated test scripts using the framework that was created by Home Assistant. These covered all devices that were cover by the Matter standard at the time (Matter 1.3). The scripts went beyond standard test suites – covering specific device types, integration behaviours and configuration nuances that existed within their platform. Each script was designed to be reusable for future Matter updates.

Testing and validation

Using our test labs and working closely with Nabu Casa, we executed the scripts, analysed results, identified compatibility gaps and liaised with the Home Assistant engineers to resolve them. The goal was to ensure that our reports met both technical and CSA compliance expectations.

The results: Certification, confidence and future-proofing

1

Certification achieved

Home Assistant and its Matter Server were officially certified by the CSA – making it the first open-source platform to earn this recognition.

2

Bespoke testing success

Our custom-built test environment proved that even complex open-source software can meet strict certification standards through tailored engineering.

3

Greater trust and credibility

Certification confirms that Home Assistant’s Matter support is reliable and compliant.

4

Reusable framework

The automated tests can be reused and extended for new versions of Matter, saving time and effort in future certifications.

5

Stronger ecosystem position

The certification helps Home Assistant attract new device partners and strengthen its integration network.

6

Technical growth

The collaboration enhanced both Home Assistant’s test capabilities and Resillion’s reputation for bespoke interoperability and certification work.

Home Assistant’s commitment to open standards and quality made this a truly collaborative effort,” said Bob Campbell, Global Head of Conformance and Interoperability, at Resillion. “Working together, we were able to translate a complex certification process into a repeatable, automated framework that not only achieved success today but will continue to support their growth in the future.
